Thank you, NetGalley and Hachette Audio, for an advanced audio copy.

Hollywood Hookup has some of the funniest writing I have read in a while, but it lacked strong characters and a plot that kept me fully engaged.

Josie used to be a child star, but has now decided to stay behind the scenes and keep her former stardom a secret. It stays a secret until her best friend needs her to step in as a replacement on a reality show to win a date with a celebrity. The celebrity is Josie’s celebrity crush, Sean. Sean was my least favorite character in the book. He was so hard to root for and relate to.

The subplot of Josie’s past with a puppet, yes, a puppet, had so much humor in the way it was told, but the plot was just silly. It leads to her tension with her family, but I never fully felt bad for Josie, as it would have been an easy situation for her to rectify.

Sean just comes off as a typical jerk. Lots of name-dropping and an odd hobby of collecting unique costume pieces? I just didn't vibe with Sean at all. He threw his money around in such an annoying way.

This is a book I would recommend for its humor. I love the writing and the jokes, I just wish the plot had worked for me.

Final Score: 3/5
