Review: Far Cry 5
Far Cry is a series that I have played every entry from, except, for some strange reason, the two most recent ones. Thanks to Ubisoft + and Amazon Luna, I was able to finally jump in.

It’s an incredible service that is helping me continue to play games no matter where I am.

Far Cry 5 takes place in a fictional town in Montana named Hope County. While Hope County is fictional, Montana obviously is not, and it’s a state I have actually been to, which made this resonate even more.

The story opens up telling the voiceless protagonist about the dangerous cult in Montana, and their leader Joseph Seed, AKA, The Father. I love the way The Father is portrayed. He is equal parts scary and creepy and may just be my new favorite Far Cry villain. That’s saying a lot since Far Cry is a series known for over the top great villains.

No spoilers, but to summarize, you show up to arrest The Father.

Slap the cuffs on him and then buckle up and get ready for an amazing ride.

Like Far Cry 4, you can end the game here in these opening moments. If you just never put the cuffs on him, you will eventually leave, and the credits will roll. I love that they add fun moments like this into their games.

After the prologue, the map is broken up into three parts. Each region is ruled by one of Josephs’s siblings. You can do them in any order you want. The gameplay loop is, you go to one of the regions and start to do main missions, side missions, and just a lot of open world craziness to start filling in a meter. When that meter fills all the way up you can then start a boss fight with the sibling who controls the area. After you take down all three you can then have your final encounter with Joseph.

There is a choice you can make, but one is canon based on the story for New Dawn, so if you somehow have avoided spoilers for this game, be sure to stay away from the plot of New Dawn.

There are a lot of satirical storylines throughout that really parody the world we currently live in.

What Far Cry has always done best is the open world activities, and in my opinion, it has never been stronger than it is in Far Cry 5. You can’t travel for very long before running into something to do. There are interactions everywhere. You will find countless civilians that need to be saved or different points of interest that need your attention. You don’t have to go at it alone either. You can bring a real life co-op partner or in game characters can join you. They are extremely varied and each has its own specialty. You can even have animal partners to help you take down your enemies.

There are some main story missions that start themselves and do not require you to go to a start location. You will see that you are being hunted. Then it’s an all out attack on you. You will end up getting taken and get a lot of story explantations.

The game makes every area feel different. The three main areas are different enough but the encounters themself are very different. For example, one of the siblings has a drug called Bliss. Bliss essentially makes people into zombies so a lot of those missions actually felt more like a horror game.

It took me roughly 20 hours to roll credits on the game, and that was without doing everything, so there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. After completing it, there is a new game plus you can start to go back into Hope County for some more action, and there is a lot of action to be had.

Far Cry 5 is one of my favorite action games in recent years. It’s now my favorite Far Cry and I still find myself going back into Hope County to clear some outpost and just run around. It has a good story with a crazy ending and an over the top villain that you will just love to hate. I strongly recommend giving this one a play.
