The Assassins Creed series is a series I completely fell off of for the most part after Ezio’s story was finished. I know I like to make list here but committing to playing all the Assassins Creed games is just not going to happen. I’m going to try to continue the series from where I left off but I know even that is probably not going to happen. I’m still going to try. I picked up where my journey left off with Assassins Creed 3.

Story

nn

The story in Assassins Creed 3 takes place during the American Revolution. This is a fascinating part of American history so I enjoyed this story and the way some historical figures were portrayed. You will meet a lot of famous people during the time, people like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin to just name a couple. n

The story starts and you are in control of a Templar named Haytham Kenway. After a few chapters, time passes and you take control of Haythams son Connor. Connors’s mother is a Native American and as Connor, you become an assassin and fight for your people and your land.

n

During the story, you will play a part in a lot of pivotal moments in history. You will be fighting during the Boston Tea Party, and you will be riding alongside Paul Revere as he warned that the British are coming. It was taking our history books and bringing them to life in an alternate history fashion.

An Assassins Creed game is not complete without the present day story which is just as annoying in this game as it was in the previous. You again take control of Desmond Miles and are trying to find answers through the use of the Animus. Every time I was playing as Desmond I could not wait for these segments to be over to be back in control of Connor. Overall I really enjoyed the story but that is coming from someone who does like history.

Gameplay

nn

This is an early Assassins Creed game so this is before the control redesign. You basically will just be hitting one button to parry and another to attack. It’s repetitive for sure, but it’s a combat style that I do enjoy. I like being swarmed by a group and just parrying all attacks thrown at me. It makes you feel powerful. n

The other major gameplay element is traversal. Climbing buildings and jumping from roof to roof is something that this series really pioneered and it still holds up today. Some of it can feel a little clunky at times, but mostly I went where I wanted to when moving around with ease.

Presentation

nn

I know it’s an old game but it still holds up graphically and looks great. My biggest issue with the presentation is the voice acting. Even a great voice actor like Nolan North who voices Desmond had a hard time holding my attention with the way lines were delivered. For such a fun story the game made me work to pay attention with the way they delivered it.

Verdict

nn

It’s been quite a few years since I played an Assassins Creed game. Sure I tried Valhalla when that came out but I barely made it out of the prologue. From what I remember of the first few games I played this was definitely my most enjoyable experience with the franchise and it has me looking forward to keep playing more.

Final score 8/10
