Book: Shoot Your Shot

Author: Lexi LaFleur Brown

Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for an advanced audio copy.

Hockey is my favorite sport, so I do tend to like hockey romances more than other sports. With the background Lexi LaFleur Brown has, I was very excited for this one.

Jaylen has been struggling and is fearful his hockey career is over. His play has been on a decline, and he said he is considered one of the biggest flops from the draft. After, in my opinion, a creepy encounter with Lucy, he then gets a break and is back on the team. Jaylen now sees Lucy as his good luck charm. I called out the encounter as creepy because while Jaylen was just being nice to Lucy at a bar, we get this from Lucy’s point of view, and she is skeptical of Jaylen. Jaylen then follows her to another bar. I understand he was being a good guy and just watching out for her, but this was their first meeting; it was a bit creepy.

Given the background of the author, I was expecting this to be more hockey-forward, but that was not the case. That’s not really a negative; it was just not what I was expecting. The relationship between Jaylen and Lucy is exactly what you would expect in a book like this. They both go through a lot of character growth, but Lucy is truly the star. It’s Lucy who makes this good book great.

If you like sports romances, then this should definitely be on your shortlist to check out.

Final Score: 4/5
