Love, love, love! This book easily has become one of my absolute favorites of all time. I can’t recommend it enough. It is such a heartfelt and remarkable story. It follows a caseworker named Linus, who is assigned to check on a very important case at an orphanage of magical children that they claimed are dangerous. To see Linus develop as a character as well as all the children is amazing.

Brian’s Review

I was definitely less hot on this book than my better half was. Personally, I felt a lot of Klune’s descriptions to be lacking an I had a hard time picturing how most of the characters would look. The story itself was not that engaging for me but I do think the messaging was well done. The book demonstrates our need to change when it comes to unconscious bias. The kids in this book are immediately judged as being monsters before anyone gets to know them. The book also takes a same sex couple and shows it exactly how it should be seen, normal, not a big deal, just people being happy. If it was not for Klune’s way to show our problems in a modern society the story would have not done it for me. This story can be a good teachable lesson for a younger audience to show them how we can not judge people and for the need for change.
