I love almost every book Frieda McFadden has put out, and that trend continues with The Intruder. While most of Frieda’s books are thrillers, the majority of them do not flirt with horror, but when they do, I tend to love them more. The Intruder is one of those books that gently flirts with a horror thriller.

Now, I said this flirts with horror, but maybe not in the way you think. There is nothing paranormal or supernatural. There are no genuine scares except for the suspense the plot builds. A bad storm hits, and Casey is stuck in her secluded cabin. She sees someone in her tool shed, and when she confronts them, she finds it’s a young girl who has clearly been abused. She has a knife and is covered in blood.

Casey invites her into her house, and the suspense builds. Why is she there? Can you trust her? Why is she covered in blood? Casey is also a mysterious character, and she generates considerable suspense surrounding her past. It was just so well done and kept me guessing the whole book.

The story is told through two points of view. A present and a past. It seems obvious, but in typical Frieda fashion, there is a fun twist that I did not see coming.

Frieda does it again. The Intruder will be perfect for fans of thrillers and even horror. Don’t miss this one.

Final score: 5/5
